Health IT in Medical School

Medical Students
We have a new wave of medical students that are coming out of medical school in this new generation of technology, social media, and healthcare innovations brought on from departments from hospitals such as Kaiser Permanente. Students now acknowledge that they need access to smartphones, tablets, and any devices that helps them integrate into an advanced society where textbooks are even read on electronic devices. It keeps those already practicing older physicians on their toes as they may feel like they are being weaved out. The Kaiser innovation team are continually improving their health IT each and everyday, I am sure that we are poised to see a huge jump in technological health devices to improve healthcare for patients and online doctor alike.
And as students are being educated through devices, I am sure the implementation of such devices to practice medicine through teleHealth will be a necessity as students will not be educated on the "older" way of practicing. Newly board certified and licensed graduate medical students will be using technology to communicate with their patients via Facebook, Twitter, etc. The influx of positions to employ such an online doctor will increase exponentially in the upcoming years with telemedicine poised to be well-received with benefits and government funding. Using devices to monitor their vital signs, using iPads and other tablets that can generate a front facing camera consultation to watch over patients, or simply using a cellular devices to speak and see with a patient at home.
Two Way Real-Time consultation is making a huge step in the world of medicine with even physician professors broadcasting lectures and PowerPoints through Podcasts and Live Stream Sites. Current board certified students are giving advices over the phone for elders who can't make it to the office. It also gives the patients the comfortability of being at home. Home is where most patient's sanctuary remain and if one can be diagnosed in their sanctuary, I'm pretty sure their healthcare would improve. Of course, there remains the security of information using already made applications like Skype and so there have been services where they have employed their own developers to develop a private video application with encryption to protect the patients' confidentiality.
TeleHealth implementation in medical schools in Arizona and Chicago have been pushing for students to receive or buy iPads because companies are moving towards digital images of the human anatomy and scrubbing through slides on a touchpad. It has been much easier on the school with it saving cost, preserving the environment and adapt to a consumer lifestyle. So when graduating, they will be able to connect with their patient who are probably now technologically literate.
In my foreseeable future, more hospitals will need to hire doctors that are well-trained with technology and trained with these new health devices that can monitor a patient's vital signs via broadband and WiFi. The ability to follow-up with patients outside of the hospital no matter whether either are will make these future medical students a much needed prospect. A medical school doesn't have to stand by the old generation of medicine when government funding and private funding are increasing the use of online doctor with telemedicine/telehealth to lessen the cost of running hospitals and free clinics.

What Are HIPAA and HITECH?

HIPAA or Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, according to the HHS or U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "provides federal protections for personal health information held by covered entities and gives patients an array of rights with respect to that information is the federal protection health information privacy." This means that any company with any access to one's personal health info is legally liable for breach or disclosure of this information.
HITECH or Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 is a supplement to HIPAA. Due to advancements in technology, especially in the health field in the form of systems such as EHR or electronic health records, this privacy and security rule went into effect to provide an extra layer of protection for one's personal health info. HITECH provides further privacy and security protection by enforcing increased financial penalties to violators.
HIPAA and HITECH are enforced to prevent healthcare service providers or any organization with access to personal health info from unauthorized use, disclosure, security breach, or loss due to misplacement or theft of people's personal health information. These laws are provided to protect patients from anything from identity theft to integrity entitlement.
HIPAA and HITECH compliance comes in the form of three required safeguards: administrative, physical, and technical to ensure that one's personal health information is kept confidential. Non-compliance will result in a fine of up to $50,000 per violation to a maximum of $1.5 million per year.

Technology and Fitness - A Blessing and a Curse

Technology has been responsible for a lot of amazing things. It has brought us advancements in medicine, communication, entertainment, travel, and more. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negatives that come along with it. In addition to the hot topic of pollution that is caused in the creation of technology, it has also led to people living much more sedentary lifestyles. Well, in some cases that is true.

How is Technology is Hurting Our Health
The answer to this is pretty obvious. Just look at what the average person spends their time doing outside of work. They are not out playing a sport, going for walks, riding a bike, or other activities. They are sitting on the couch watching TV, playing on their computer, tablet, smart phone, or playing video games. Forget about outside or work and take a look at while we are at work. We have been moving further and further from the days of manual labor and more towards desk jobs while we let machines do the hard work.
Combine the more sedentary lifestyle with the unhealthy food that we are eating, and it is no wonder obesity is out of control. I could spend the next hour talking about how the unhealthy food that technology is creating (additives, preservatives, pesticides and more), the pollution caused in the creation of the technology, and the sedentary lifestyle that it has led to are coming together to destroy the health of multiple generations, but I am not going to go down that road. Instead, I am going to look at the opposite end of the spectrum.

How Technology Helps Promote Fitness
As an individual, there is very little that you can do to reduce the amount of chemicals we add to food, or the amount of pollution that the companies are creating. While you can decide to buy organic and support companies that produce less, the other companies are still out there. However, when it comes to how active you are, the sky is the limit, and technology is a powerful tool to help you get into the best shape of your life.
There are a variety of ways that technology assists people in living healthier lifestyles. For starters, you have access to the internet. While there is a ton of useless and misleading information out there, there is also a lot of valuable information at your fingertips. We also have amazing tools for tracking and planning our workouts, measuring it's effects on our health, and learning what the best way is for us to get healthy. Heart rate monitors, watches that are basically computers and safety gear are just a small sample of the ways technology are helping people be more active.
Technology can either be your excuse for not being active, or a powerful tool to help you be more active. While you used to need a personal trainer, now you follow along with a Beachbody Workout Program. They are a great way to learn from a world class trainer in the comfort of you home. The 21 Day Fix not only gives you the workouts, but teaches you how to eat healthier. In the end, the decision about how active or sedentary you will be is your choice. Choose wisely!

The Health Exchange

More and more individuals are starting to discover how difficult it can be in this country to not only find reasonable health care coverage, but also how they can afford it over the long haul as well. Even though there are constant debates and political forums talking about what should be done concerning health care, there are more and more specific problems that continue to come out. Whether an individual is capable of taking care of his or her own health problems in itself is just one issue, but the ideas of the total healthcare crisis have become much more severe.
First and foremost, if someone isn't able to afford realistic and efficient healthcare at a reasonable rate then what's the point of it all? People go to work, plan for extra activities, and have families and friends in order to enjoy life, but if they aren't able to have real healthcare in order to take care of them when they are sick, then what is really the point of it all? Obviously what people believe will come down to a lot of things, and in the past their options would be very limited. However, if the different healthcare reforms are passed and they include an option such as the health exchange, then individuals might be singing a different tune and they may just be able to take care of themselves a little more efficiently and at a much more affordable rate as well.
Obviously there are still some questions that have yet to be decided when concerning the health care debate and the health exchange in itself, but overall the news is positive because it's at least a start.
No matter what your side or political affiliation, there is always a belief that people need some things more than they need others. Healthcare is one of the top things that anyone should look to having because it not only helps any individual at any given time but as more and more people continue to put money into the health insurance industry then it allows the health companies to become more efficient, find better processes, create better treatments and etc. Obviously it can't all be done in a single day, but by creating a better and more efficient health care system such as the health exchange then individuals will definitely be able to create a much healthier lifestyle for themselves all while creating a much healthier society as well.
The Health Exchange is still being developed even as we speak and because it is so new it will take time to work out all of the bugs. However, as we continue to move forward, it looks like people will continue to be presented with newer and more affordable options within the health care world. And, as long as individuals are truly able to see the bright side with new health care options and technologies coming out in the near future (and even now), then we will start to see a healthier society and a more efficient healthcare sector as well.

Your Lifestyle Depends upon Health Technology

Medical care, while in the strictest sense and broadest sense of the term, is the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and identification of physical and mental diseases, illnesses, and conditions that cause harm to humans. Medical care is located in all fields related to health, and is the objective and goal of the medical personnel tasked with delivering it to the billions of people on planet earth. Dentists, doctors, nutritionists, surgeons, and even medical volunteers at a charitable institution: when it comes to healthcare, these are the professionals tasked with delivering it.
Besides medical personnel, another ingredient of medical care and wellness lies within another instrument. Healthcare technology is surely an instrumental component of medical care, and it is quite as necessary as doctors, dentists, and surgeons. Health technology includes any medical product which aims to aid in diagnosing, treatment, and prevention of any disease or disorder in a person, and whose aim is also to promote wellness. Health technology includes any device, pharmaceutical, procedure, organizational system, or innovation designed to increase the quality of the medical care being provided for any individual.
There's a lot of varieties of healthcare technology available today. It is possible to say that the very first type of healthcare technology could quite possibly have come about as soon as ancient man learned how to fashion a healing balm using leaves or as soon as anybody discovered the steps to making a tourniquet. Healthcare technology evolved through the years, from the moment people could construct them, the moment people could put them to use.
Today, humans have come up with quite an amazing number of healthcare technology and devices which have far exceeded the effectiveness and simplicity of any ancient healing balm or natural salve. Health technology is supplied in different forms, sizes, and uses too. For instance, you can find wheelchairs, contacts, antibiotics, condoms, oxygen masks, insulin, MRI and Cat Scanners, surgical instruments; even dental floss is included in this particular list, with dental floss being an instrument to stop nasty plaque and cavities from wrecking your teeth.
This variety of medical products now numbers into the hundreds of thousands, and with the ingenuity and know-how of men and women all over the world, this list of healthcare technology and devices will continue growing at frenetic pace. Another healthcare technology product which the healthcare industry has produced is also hoping to be one of the most promising.
Health information technology currently is producing healthcare management systems that try to help a person manage his healthcare by making use of online community platforms that may assist them to manage their personal health by using a variety of means like tracking their personal health, interacting with medical personnel and fellow health-conscious individuals, and can even allow them to play interactive games with each other. These platforms also enable people to engage with their health care providers on a more enjoyable level outside the "delivery point of care".
All in all, these new medical innovations, devices, and products all work to give us a better quality of life, a life significantly much better than one without healthcare technology to provide us with the necessary healthcare.

Benefits of Using Mobile Apps in Health Technology

Mobile technology like wireless censors and cell phones are increasingly being used to access & gather health information quickly and efficiently. Mobile apps serve several health purposes such as counting calories, tracking workouts, helping to quit smoking, and counting body mass index. Medical practitioners are deploying mobile applications in health care centers to help them in research of complex medical conditions. Mobile devices are a fast and inexpensive means of acquiring the behavior patterns of patients, their disease symptoms, metabolites & toxins in the environment, and encouraging interactions between doctor & patient. Study reports reveal that mobile applications will benefit research in biomedical studies and introduce highly innovative tools in biomedicine. Since mobile devices need very little energy to operate and are also miniaturized, a research laboratory can be brought to the patient rather than the sick having to travel for treatment.
Imagine a life in which you could simply fire up a mobile application & monitor your heart rate and then send a reading to your cardiologist who is sitting in some other part of the world. Wireless sensors have generated interest and increased use among medical practitioners since they allow tracking of sleeping patterns of patients wherever they are during the night; this means doing away with self reporting and studies in the laboratory. By using mobile apps doctor can monitor the blood pressure levels of a patient while he is pursuing his daily activities; this time is far more important than when the patient is sitting inside the clinic. Advanced mobile technology enables the use of washable tattoos fitted with nanosensors to take readings of blood sugar levels. The reading can easily be transmitted to your doctor using a mobile device like a smartphone & the treatment procedure can be followed up by maintaining regular contact using similar mobile applications.
Realizing the benefits of mobile applications in the field of health technology, the National Institute of Health is building an interdisciplinary research team that will conduct an in-depth study on the importance of mobile health apps and work towards minimizing any risk involved in the use of these apps. Software developers, health researchers, and app designers have come together under one roof to evaluate the possibilities of mobile app technology in healthcare.
While it is relatively easy for individuals to monitor health problems & transmit health information using mobile apps, the challenge is to maintain security and privacy of the health data. The National Institute of Health team is also working towards setting strict guidelines for maintaining health data transmitted through mobile health apps. Doctors, physicians, and scientists have gradually learnt the benefits of mobile applications in the world of healthcare, but to use the technology for sound & safe health practices is the biggest challenge that faces healthcare. It is time for individuals, patients, medical practitioners, and researchers to sit up and take notice of the fact that mobile health apps are not mere toys to be used at times of emergency but useful tools for improving the quality of health conditions of the young & old.

Biosphere Technology - The Advanced Energy Conversion

Some energy sources cause implications to the environment and public health but not with Biosphere Technology. This technology is an advanced energy conversion which integrates gasification process to convert waste materials into green energy without harming the natural environment and human health. Dr. Chris MacCormack is the man behind this ingenious invention on waste treatment and energy production. He is the CEO and Chairman of Global Environmental Energy Corporation (GEECF), a company that focuses on clean technology and innovation researches.
Aside from its significant contribution to green energy production, it is also a valuable tool in eliminating waste materials by using advanced method of destroying waste. Unlike with traditional energy conversion methods such as burning of fossil fuels its entire process is proven to be environmental. This technology is also in full compliance with international atmospheric standard emissions including U.S, European, Japan atmospheric standards and EPA.
Similar with traditional renewable energy sources, green energy can be harvested over and over again only the source is different. With biosphere technology, there is no need to harness energy from natural resources, because it uses waste materials for fueling and harnessing green energy. This technology can efficiently replace landfill systems which often cause leachate issues and other contamination on our natural environment.
Biosphere Technology for Energy Efficiency and Environmental Preservation
Biosphere Technology offers a practical way of resolving both energy and environmental problems without causing impact to the environment. With the ever-growing demand of energy and continues increase of oil prices, this is one of the best solutions that we can develop. If countries will all adopt this technology, it will lessen atmospheric emissions and minimize the use of natural resources thus greatly preserve both energy and the environment. Since it uses waste materials to produce heat steam for producing energy it does not require much energy thus the greater its efficiency level compare to coal fired power plants and oil refineries. Its production of green energy entails no sacrifices of our natural resources while improving the production of energy at more environmental level.
The Marketable By-Products of Biosphere Technology
In the entire process of biosphere technology, there are about five end products like green energy (electricity), carbon black, high alloy steel wire, pozzolanic ash, and potable water. The green energy and potable which we all know it are very valuable for survival and development while the others are all usable in other industries like rubber manufacturing, ink, cement and steel industry.

The Future of Healthcare - The Impact of Technology

The advances in the technology and pharmaceutical products have resulted in a lot of innovations in the healthcare industry. New medicines are being developed in order to treat, manage and prevent many diseases and aging conditions of baby boomer population. Based on molecular and genetic tests new medical treatments and discoveries are being made. The future of healthcare seems to be bright as advances are being made in the health care technology and more individualized and targeted tests are being made, which reveal how people respond to different drugs.
Future of healthcare will also be impacted by the recently started electronic medical records. With the advancement of technology, the electronic medical records are sure to be affected and improved, thereby making the process of maintaining the patient related data in a more enhanced and sophisticated way. Eventually all the paper based patient related data will be converted to electronic medical records, thereby eliminating the need to maintain paper based records. At present thirty eight percent of the physicians have made a switch to the electronic medical record system and this percentage is expected to rise in the near future.
Telemedicine is another interesting aspect that is bound to gain a lot of focus in the future of healthcare industry. Telemedicine is a process of connecting physicians and patients through modern day technology, such as the internet. Telemedicine allows the physicians to interact with the patients via internet in a real time situation, thereby eliminating the need of making an office visit. This not only saves a lot of time but also cuts down on the expenses. With the advancements in technology, telemedicine is sure to gain a lot of advantage. It is a growing trend that will maintain its progress even in the future.
Robotic surgery is another important aspect of future of healthcare sector. In the recent years, more and more robots have been assisting the surgeons in the operation rooms and this is a trend that is bound to gain a lot of focus in the coming years. Be it a surgery related to a prostrate cancer or heart, robotic surgery is an efficient solution. Though highly expensive, the usage of a robot for a surgery results in a shorter recovery time, since the surgery procedure is less invasive. Another surgery that a robot can efficiently perform is the hysterectomy. The process of removing the uterus for a wide variety of reasons is known as hysterectomy and this is one of the surgeries that a robot can perform very efficiently. Since, most of the women do not like the scars, which surface after the surgery, robotic surgery is the solution for them. As the robots perform the surgery with very less invasion, there are very less scars and even the recovery time is very short.
The future of healthcare has a lot of potential in discovering alternative medicines, new treatments and prevention techniques, etc. The more common the technology becomes, the less expensive will it be.

Will the March of Technology Cause the Human Body to Become Redundant?

Every day technology advances at a frightening speed. Things like the awe of the internet, satellite navigation systems; spaceships about to launch civilians into space flights, bionic limbs, growing new body parts from stem cells and talking live to someone on the other side of the world on video are just a few of the mind blowing advancements.
It is an exciting time to be alive in human evolution but there is a dark side to the comfort and ease of our modern conveniences. We have become fat, lazy and sick and these epidemic health threats have paralleled the march of technology.
We spend our days hardly moving. We go from our bed, to sit in our car, to our desk where we sit all day. The most work we do is to click a mouse as we sit motionless in front of a computer screen. We get back in our car for the drive home only to sit in front of a screen of some sort remaining virtually motionless till we go to bed again.
Yet our bodies have not changed in tens of thousands of years. They were designed to be active - very active. They are designed for hard physical work which is the necessary signals that tell our body that its strength is needed to feed a family. That it is needed to remain alive and well.
Take that work away and we are programmed to decay, deteriorate and die as quickly as possible to make room at the trough for the next generation. Without physical 'work' there are no signals to trigger the 'growth and repair' hormones that keep the human body strong so it can hunt and gather food to feed others.
Just the same as they did tens of thousands of years ago. Our bodies have not changed their blueprint but our modern lives have changed and no longer care about what our bodies need to keep themselves health and well.
We have become spoiled. Lazy. Complacent. Doctor dependent. And we are paying a high price for it. As if a pill or medical procedure can fix the human body once it has broken down. By the time a 'chronic lifestyle' killer disease shows itself it could have been ten, twenty or more years in the making.
Fifty percent of the world's population has a chronic 'lifestyle disease' and many have multiple conditions which slowly siphons their lives away. These diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes and dozens of others are called 'lifestyle diseases' because they are caused by the way we live our lives. Caused by what we do and don't do every single day in the way of proper exercise and proper nutrition.
Ironically, none of our new technological marvels and ground breaking scientific or medical miracles can solve our overweight, our obesity and our sickness.
Our so called 'health system' should be called a 'sickness system' as it does not create health and only treats sickness.
We have to realize there is no easy way. There is no pill, no doctor, and no machine and there never will be. More knowledge is not going to help; we already have all the answers. We understand the human body better than ever before. But we have to do more than 'talk the talk'. The problem lies in the doing (or lack of it). We have to 'walk the walk' as well.
You have to do the work - in the gym and in the kitchen. But that unfortunately that takes will power, discipline, mental toughness, effort and some hard work. And these are attributes that seem to have left the human consciousness as only six out of ten adults even bother to exercise.
They have become so complacent that they no longer even seem to care that a sedentary lifestyle which is defined as 'not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity' is dangerously shortening their lives.
Science has revealed that we age badly not because to the passing years but because we stop being active and challenging our body. If we don't start making better exercise and nutrition choices the human body is in danger of becoming redundant and what happens to the technology then?

Pure Water Technology

Necessity is the mother of all inventions and given the ever increasing concerns from the public about the quality and safety of their drinking water, it is little wonder then that there has been a plethora of research and technology solely dedicated to developing and finessing the pure water technology. The average consumer is at somewhat of a tactical disadvantage as they will have to contend with not only a befuddling amount of information and range of products but will also have to deal with the over excitable sales blurb from the various manufacturers.
Too many consumers succumb to the slippery charms of a water treatment salesperson only to later discover that they have committed themselves to the purchase of a product which is in reality is not especially effective or helpful for them.
The first serious attempt at water treatment was in the 60s with the development of reverse osmosis filtration, and although this technology is still in use today, it has been widely debunked as a waste of time and money as well as posing a significant risk to health.
The excessive wastage associated with this form of water filtration is unmatched anywhere else, and it also happens to be more costly than any other form of water treatment.
One of the latest models to break into the water treatment market is the so called carbon based filtration system. Although it tends to suffer from rather sluggish sales records due to the rather steep sales price which attaches itself to it.
This technology has been heralded by many as being one of the best types of pure water technology available, as it actively removes chlorine from the water. Chlorine is linked to a number of different health problems ranging from skin irritation and asthma, to more severe illnesses such as cancer.
One of the most significant and noticeable benefits afforded by the carbon based filtration systems is their ability to actually balance the pH scale of the water that passes through the system. If water is too acidic, not only does this pose a risk to health but also to your clothing as well.
Using a carbon based filtering system then will mean that your clothes will last much longer than they would with other systems as the reduced acidity of the water will no longer eat away at your clothing.
Water filtering is an essential feature of any home as it is so crucial to promote and guarantee good health and well being. Don't put a price on your family's health; buy a water filtration unit today!

Save With Green Technology

The term green technology may conjure images of scientists designing futuristic solar or wind energy equipment. But it is more than that.
Technology derives from the Greek word technologia, meaning the systematic treatment of an art. There are many actions you can systematically take each day which may seem low-tech as compared to a hybrid car, but which will save you time and money while improving the health of the world in which we all live.
In the process, you may create a green innovation to the job you now perform, or build a new opportunity for yourself in this rapidly growing economic sector.
What Is It?
According to Green Technology, a non-profit initiative designed to promote sustainability through private sector-public sector cooperation, the primary goals of green technology are:
  1. Sustainability: providing for our needs without depleting or harming natural resources or impairing our children's ability to provide for themselves
  2. Renewable Design: engineering products so they can eventually be reclaimed for later use instead of being thrown out-called "cradle to cradle" design
  3. Source Reduction: changing patterns of production and consumption to reduce waste
  4. Innovation: finding alternatives to unhealthful technologies such as fossil fuel or petrochemicals
  5. Viability: capitalizing on products and activities that benefit health and the environment so they are more quickly adopted, create jobs, and products pricing drops due to greater supply.
How Can You Play A Role?
  • Adopt Green Habits. From the list of green living ideas at our personal website below, pick three that you can, and more importantly that you will adopt immediately as a new routine in your life. Remember that technology requires a systematic approach. Stick with whatever you choose, and add others as you are able.
  • Make a Difference at Work. This can include starting or improving a recycling program, helping to facilitate more energy efficient building features or energy use, transitioning to purchasing practices supporting environmentally sound products or allowing flexible work-at-home scheduling to reduce building space needs and travel costs.
  • Become an Expert. Educate yourself through web resources, books and seminars or classes. Find out what others in your field of interest are doing to innovate toward green practices and mimic them. Make a proposal to your boss, your school district, residential community or other body that sets forth a goal and how you would oversee its attainment. After one project, you suddenly have a new resume entry or side business.
  • Fill a Need While Making Money. Often we ask ourselves why someone doesn't provide a needed service. With the help of Home Based Business Hub your ideas become strategies and an action plan for operating a green business from home.
Don't Green Technologies Cost More?
The answer to this depends on how one looks at "cost." At the dealership, a hybrid Toyota Prius will cost more than a comparably equipped gasoline car. Over its lifetime, however, you will almost certainly recoup the added expense through better fuel efficiency and lower repair rates due to fewer moving parts.
Also consider the hidden environmental cost of the higher polluting gasoline car. Part of our taxes goes to government efforts to clean the air, so it follows that we will pay less if we pollute less.
On the consumer products side, a concentrated chemical household cleaner will likely be a bit cheaper per ounce than a green version. This has to do with economies of scale and who pays for hidden costs.
Until green cleaners get enough viability, or market share, to allow them to be truly mass produced, the mass produced chemical versions will remain cheaper. If you buy the green version, you are inching that company toward being able to offer a lower price to improve its competitive edge.
The hidden cost factor is largely environmental protection costs which the green company chooses to pay, but the chemical company does not yet have to pay.

An example is production waste. A chemical cleaner company can dispose of waste up to the legally allowable air, water or solid waste limits without cost. The green company typically uses green technology to pollute much less, but at a cost which is passed in part to the consumer.
